The sharp eyes of 17 HDNS members spotted numerous different fungal species at Farnham Gravel Pit on Saturday 19 October. After reaching our agreed two hour time limit we had only managed a search from the car park to the vicinity of the Bird Hide! In that time, we had spotted many species, mainly growing in the grass or on old birch logs near the car park, on the bank to the hide and in the copse behind it. We would have needed a whole day to explore all around the lake.
Unfortunately, our leader, Kevin Walker, was unable to join us as he had planned. Kevin has a detailed knowledge of the fungi at Farnham. However, thankfully we could turn to the expertise of Mervin Nethercoat and Denise Carter to assist with identifying. It was a relief when finding a fungus with distinctive characteristics, such as Purple Jelly Disc (Ascocoryne sarcoides), rather than yet another challenging small fungus in the Mycenae group! A list of fungi found is attached and also plenty of photos to help ID just some of the fungi at Farnham.
