About the location

An important spawning site for lampreys, which can sometimes be observed from the bridge. April is the peak month for River Lamprey, although numbers have declined in recent years, possibly due to commercial fishing. The relatively large, mottled Sea Lamprey is most likely to be spotted in June or July. Other fish which can be seen include Chub, Dace and Barbel. Shoals of Bleak can often be observed in the canal on warm summer days. Birds such as Goosander, Heron, Kingfisher and Grey Wagtail are resident.
