The How Stean Beck flows off the West Nidderdale moors and through a deep limestone gorge before meeting the River Nidd.

Car parks in Lofthouse and near the Gorge
Access
Public Rights of Way follow much of the Beck, with open access land above, but access to the Gorge is private and an entry fee is payable.
Terrain
Steep footpaths make this location unsuitable for wheelchair users

About the location
The limestone walls of the Gorge are covered in mosses and liverworts, several that are very scarce elsewhere in our area. Upstream there are basic flushes in the acidic moorland.
