Rossett Local Nature Reserve

This small urban nature reserve is located off a 400 metre long section of Rossett Drive, adjoining Richmond Avenue. There are several small, weedy ponds, along with some scrub and some grassland. It is a Site of Interest for Nature Conservation for its amphibians, particularly a breeding colony of Great Crested Newt.

Roadside parking along Richmond Avenue, or Rossett Drive via Rossett Avenue, Harrogate.

Entry is through a gate in a hedge.

Constructed footpaths and wooden stages, which provide easy, level walking.

About the location

This reserve is noted for the amphibians which breed in the ponds and in particular, a thriving colony of Great Crested Newt. Smooth Newt, Common Frog and Common Toad are also present. Several resident bird species breed on the site and winter thrushes, including Fieldfare and Redwing, pass through to feed on berries. Butterflies are well represented in season and include Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Small Heath and Large and Small Skippers.
